Located in the rich environment of the valley of the Guadalquivir, in the district of the Loma, the family castle of Canena has given its name to our extra virgin oils. This land, the essence of Andalusian geography, located in the unique artistic environment of Úbeda and Baeza, continues to have the Roman, Arab, Mudejar and Renaissance influences that modelled it over the years and have also influenced our history.
This fortress, which is full of passages from our history, was built by the Arabs in the ruins of a Roman castrum, there being written testimony that the king of the Taifa of Toledo took refuge in this castle upon the fall of the city.
Later, under the control of the order of Calatrava it was a legal jurisdiction and was part of the defensive belt of the “advanced” fortresses, so called because they formed a frontier with the Arabs during the 200 years that followed the battle of Navas de Tolosa.
Later, in 1538 Francisco de los Cobos, secretary to the emperor Charles V, whom we had the honour of accommodating, transformed it into a Castle-Palace, entrusting the project to the prestigious architect Vandelvira. Today it is admired as one of the most beautiful examples of the Andalusian Renaissance.
This fortress remained in the hands of his descendants, who were already the marquises of Camarasa. It was declared a National Monument in 1931 and subsequently restored and preserved with the utmost care by our family.
We welcome our clients and friends to visit our house and share with us the experience of the world of olive groves and oils, the incredible gastronomy of our land and the beauty of Úbeda and Baeza, which are 10 km away from the Castle, both of them being part of the Heritage of Humanity and both making this area the “Spanish Tuscany” for many.
