A study on a natural metabolo-epigenetic inhibitor of tumour stem cells present in extra-virgin olive oil, in which the University of Granada (UGR) participated, was the winner of the 4th Castillo de Canena “Luis Vaño” Prize for Research Related to the Olive Oil Industry, receiving €6,000 and an accreditation plaque. Organised by the prestigious olive oil company based in Jaén, it is supported by the University of Jaén and the University of California in Davis (UC Davis) in the United States.

The authors of this study are Antonio Segura Carretero, professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Granada and scientific research coordinator for the Technological Centre of Research and Development of Functional Food (CIDAF), and Javier A. Menéndez, researcher at the Biomedical Research Institute of Girona (IDIBGI)-Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO). The jury, comprising representatives from both universities, highlighted the quality as well as the quantity of the studies, with a total of fifteen presented at this 4th edition.

The Rector of Jaén University, Juan Gómez Ortega, emphasised the international aspect of this prize, “with each edition allowing more and more research studies to compete”, as well as the variety of subject areas addressed in these works, including the environment, quality of oils, and health, the latter being the focus of this year’s winning study, which “offers new findings on the benefits of consuming extra-virgin olive oil to combat cancer”.

Meanwhile Dan Flynn, Executive Director of the UC Davis Olive Center, made particular reference to the winning work by highlighting that “it offers exciting evidence of a new type of phytochemical in extra-virgin olive oil, which offers the promise of a successful treatment to fight cancer without the toxicity present in other forms of treatment available today”.

The aim of the Castillo de Canena “Luis Vaño” Prize for Research Related to the Olive Oil Industry is to encourage and stimulate scientific and technological knowledge in the field of research on the olive tree and olive oils. This initiative, which began in 2011, is one of the various activities organised by the company, Castillo de Canena, in the sphere of Corporate Social Responsibility, and seeks to stimulate more in-depth knowledge and research within the olive and olive oil sector both in Spain and internationally. The award ceremony will be held this April at the Castillo de Canena.
