Competition rules for the V Luis Vaño Prize

Since the early 1980’s Luis Vañó, a true son of Jaén by birth and by conviction, has dedicated all his energies to promoting innovation and constant improvement in olive cultivation and olive oil production. At a time when few others were thinking in these terms, he looked to different fields of scientific knowledge to strengthen his companies and make them more competitive. With this Call  for Entries to the  V Edition of the  Castillo de Canena “Luis Vañó” Award for Research on Olive Cultivation and Oil, the Castillo de Canena company pays tribute to its President’s long history of fruitful work, work that has contributed greatly to the economic and social development of the Jaén Province while stimulating research and better understanding of olive cultivation and olive oil.

With the aim of promoting and stimulating scientific knowledge and technological capacity in the field of olive cultivation and olive oil production, the family-owned enterprise Castillo de Canena launches its V Edition of the Castillo de Canena “Luis Vañó” Award for Research on Olive Cultivation and Olive Oil with a public call for entries, subject to the following RULES:

  1. The competition is open to all original scientific and technological research papers in the field of olive cultivation that have not been published before October 1, 2017. Papers should contribute significantly to the corpus of research on any of the following topics:
    • Olive groves and the environment
    • Olive oils and health
    • Olive oils and quality
    • Management of olive tree and olive oil by-products
  2. There shall be one prize of SIX THOUSAND EUROS and an official plaque which shall be awarded to the winner, as decided in an open competitive process. The award shall not be divided. The prize is subject to taxation as dictated by law.
  3. In the event that the award-winning paper has not been previously published, the author(s) may choose to publish the work either in its entirety or in a summarized version (not exceeding 250 double-spaced pages). The publication shall be in Spanish and English, with 1000 printed copies. There shall be no second prize.
  4. Prize-winning papers that have not previously been published may be submitted for publication in scholarly journals or other publications, highlighting that they are winners of the V International Castillo de Canena “Luís Vañó” Award for Research on Olive Cultivation and Olive Oil.
  5. The jury shall be presided over by the Rector of the University of Jaén and shall include renowned scholars in the field of olive cultivation and olive oil research. The jury shall be comprised of 8 members, 4 selected by the University of Jaén and 4 by the University of California at Davis.
  6. All entries must be submitted between the 1st of April and the 30th of October of 2019.
  7. The jury’s decision shall be announced before December 30th 2019. This decision is final.
  8. Entry in the competition for this Award is open to individuals as well as research teams. In the case of research teams, a full list of participants shall be included in the application, with one member designated as representative. In the event that the prize is awarded to a paper submitted by a research team, the sum of the prize shall be divided equally amongst the members of the team.
  9. Papers shall be in Spanish or in English, on paper or on a digital storage device. They shall be submitted using the envelope and pseudonym system, without any signature or other information that might serve to identify the author(s). A separate sealed envelope should contain the address and personal contact information of the author(s). On the cover of the paper should appear only the title of the work and a pseudonym of the author. The author’s pseudonym should also appear on the outside of the sealed envelope that accompanies the paper, along with the name “V International Castillo de Canena “Luís Vañó” Award for Research on Olive Cultivation and Olive Oil.” Inside the sealed envelope participants should place the application form, indicating the full name(s) of the author(s), as well as a contact address, telephone number, fax number, etc., a declaration of agreement to the terms of participation, and a CV of the author(s). The envelope should also include a summary (maximum 3 pages) of the paper submitted, highlighting the study’s principle contributions to the field.
  10. Papers should be sent to the following address: C/ Cura, núm. 41 – 23440, Baeza (Jaén), España.
  11. The decision of the UC Davis jury will be sent to the University of Jaén with a score on each of the papers submitted and a ranking of all the papers. The jury at the University of Jaén will also score each paper, and then will analyse the UC Davis ranking and compare the results of the two juries. Both Universities will use the same criteria for evaluating the works submitted, with each weighted at 20 points for a maximum total of 100 points:
    • Originality of the study
    • Use of appropriate experimental techniques
    • Correct citation of sources
    • Analysis of experimental results
    • Relevance of the study’s results
  12. In the event of a tie between two submissions, the President will decide the winner.
  13. The winner(s) of the award shall be invited to attend an Award Ceremony, as shall the President of the Jury from UC Davis
  14. Participation in this call for entries indicates a complete acceptance of its RULES.
  15. If the jury deems that none of the works submitted meet the standards of scholarship, it may choose not to award the prize.
  16. Those submissions that do not win the award may be retrieved by their authors or representatives within a period of two months from the day the winner is announced. If they are not collected in these period they may be destroyed.
